I'm not very Pokemon savvy or anything, so I'm not completely familiar with any of these 'newer' ones, but I do know that you did this awesomely well.

I like the composition, especially, because it makes you look & think twice before realising that--HEY. That tree is growing on his shell & not part of the actual landscape! I like how you managed to trick your eyes like that.

And I think you lie about how you fail at landscapes. It does not 'ainfully show' at all! I like the subtly of the rays of sunlight peeking through the tree on his back, as well as the tears swelling up in his eyes, not to mention the saliva on his tongue too.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You did excellently with this! And it's even one of the better Pokemon fan-arts that I've seen that end up with 100+ favs. This deserves just as much attention too, & I'm quite surprised that it lacks a spotlight in Pokemon fan-art popularity.
